Project Night Night

Bedtime is an important occasion for any child. It stands for a time of security and comfort where children can rest for another day of learning and exploration. However, for homeless children, this luxury often exists only as a dream. With Project Night Night, a safe and restful bedtime has been made a reality by providing these children in shelters from birth to pre-teen with childhood essentials.

Living without a home can be an incredibly daunting and emotionally debilitating situation. Project Night Night offers refuge with their Night Night Package which includes a new security blanket, an age-appropriate children’s book, and a stuffed animal carefully packed into a tote bag.

The program was developed by Kendra Stitt Robins, who as a corporate attorney, initially formed nonprofits for other businesses, but always considered that it was something she wanted to do. When she had her child and realized how much a blanket meant–it signified home, safety and security—she thought about victims of domestic violence, women who had to flee terrible situations without much time to take anything with them and were lucky enough to have taken their children. And for those children, many of them had to sleep in noisy, scary, unfamiliar places without shelter of their own. It was then that she decided to pack together a blanket, book, and stuffed animal, “classic American comforts when we grow up.” With the Night Night Package, she strives to make the shelter “a little more like home” so that they may sleep soundly to be better equipped to deal with their day.

Voted the “Best Children’s Charity” by San Francisco Magazine, Project Night Night delivers their packages to over 25,000 homeless children per year. In addition to caring for the community, the organization also keeps in mind Mother Earth with drop off locations for like-new children’s items that would otherwise go to the landfill. With over 1.3 million homeless children in the US, Project Night Night is working to provide solace to all of them.
